In this thesis Fourier optics is used to analyze a gradient-index (GRIN) rod and a GRIN fiber array. With this viewpoint we present several novel interpretations of the imaging of these systems, including derivations for the impulse responses for both Fourier transform planes and imaging planes, including aberrations. In addition, both coherent and incoherent illuminations are considered. An effective aberration transmission function is defined and calculated to have the diffraction effect and aberrations included in the Fourier optics. The theoretical predictions from the Fourier optics including aberrations are in excellent agreement with the experimental results. This treatment provides a powerful tool for resolution and image quality analysis of a GRIN rod and a GRIN array.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The depth-of-field phenomenon for a GRIN array is quite different from that for a lens. We present both a geometrical optics based and a physical optics analysis for the depth-of-field of the array. To extend the depth-of-field, a novel design of phase masks with post digital processing is proposed. Two fabrication techniques of masks are studied and compared. The experimental setup for measurement of phase masks is established. The alignment of masks is studied. The point-spread functions of the GRIN fiber array with phase masks for defocused objects are calculated and digitally processed with the maximum entropy algorithm. The depth-of-field is expected to be 2 to 3 times that for the uncorrected array.
