Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is increasingly common and highly disruptive among college students. SAD can be easily treated with bright light therapy (BLT); however, BLT has not been tested with college students, and previous research has used inadequate control conditions: Some placebos are unconvincing, while others actually provided some effective therapy. Also, no previous study of BLT seems to have considered the SAD sufferer's ethnicity. The study reported here was conducted during the winter at an upstate New York college located at a relatively high latitude, a major SAD causal factor. Forty students, aged 18-22, diagnosed with SAD participated. Participants included 24 females (60%) and 16 males (40%), and 10 (25%) African-American, 8 (20%) Hispanic, and 22 (55%) White, non-Hispanic. Taking into account ethnicity and gender, subjects were randomly assigned to a 3-week treatment regimen using either an active 10,000 lux BLT device or an inactivated ion generator as a believable, ineffective placebo. SAD symptoms were measured by the Hamilton Depression Rating-Seasonal Affective Disorder (SIGH-SAD) at baseline and after each week, and the Beck Depression Inventory-2nd Edition (BDI-II), at baseline and end of treatment. Results showed a dramatic improvement in the BLT group (e.g., in the first week alone the SIGH-SAD mean dropped from 39.2, SD= 6.1, to 20.7, SD= 11.1, p<.001) but not in the control group. With a remission criterion of a 50% reduction in symptoms, 80% of subjects in the BLT group but none in the control were in remission at the end of treatment (p<.001). Improvement did not differ by gender, ethnicity, or expectation of improvement. It was concluded that BLT treatment of SAD is fast, inexpensive, and effective for college students, and should be available at all colleges where SAD is prevalent.
