The purpose of this study was to determine the differences in academic and social expectations of first-generation and non-first-generation undergraduates who attended a doctoral-granting public four-year historically Black university. First-generation students were defined as college students in which neither parent obtained a bachelor's degree.

520 $a The purpose of this study was to determine the differences in academic and social expectations of first-generation and non-first-generation undergraduates who attended a doctoral-granting public four-year historically Black university. First-generation students were defined as college students in which neither parent obtained a bachelor's degree.
520 $a The study population consisted of 205 freshmen during the fall of 2003 and spring of 2004 semesters attending a university on the eastern shore of Maryland. One hundred thirty-three (65.5%) were first-generation college students and 70 (34.5%) were non-first-generation college students. The majority of the students were African-American (84.4%).
520 $a The findings from this study indicated that first-generation and non-first-generation students were similar regarding most of their academic and social expectations. They differed significantly regarding their expectations to transfer to another institution before graduating and to socialize with friends who are students at their institution. Students who had parents with no college experience indicated they were more likely to expect to stay at their institution until graduating than were students who had at least one parent with a bachelor's degree. Also, students who had parents with no college experience said they were more likely to spend less time socializing with friends at the institution than were students with some college experience and students who had at least one parent with a bachelor's degree. This study supports the existence of early identification of first-generation students in order to address possible misconceptions regarding academic and social expectations. Therefore, college and university administrators and student affairs professionals should consider these findings when recruiting, admitting and retaining first-generation and non-first-generation students.
