Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of California, Los Angeles, 2006.
The main objective of this dissertation was to examine the effects of social networks on extent of depressive symptoms in patients with early rheumatoid arthritis (RA). We hypothesized that the better social networks one has, the less depressive symptoms they will report, regardless of and disease activity. Upon entering the study at baseline and approximately every six months, patients were asked to complete surveys by mail. Degree of depression was measured using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression (CES-D) questionnaire, and social networks were measured using the Lubben Social Networks Scale. Being female, having lower income, being younger, having poorer physical function, worse global rating of health, being in more pain, and being isolated or at a higher risk for social isolation were all significant predictors of depressive symptoms. We recommend that RA patients be screened for depression and that social network interventions be considered for those with significant depressive symptoms.
