520 $a In our first study we compared linked crash-and hospital-based records that included a subset of children represented in both data sources. Approximately 20% of hospital inpatients were not found in crash records, the unlinked records could be result in inaccurate or biased estimates, depending on the underlying reasons for non-linkage. We linked 67% of crash-reported 'Severe' injuries and 9% of 'Other Visible' injuries and found an overall positive association between law-enforcement reported injury severity and the likelihood of hospitalization.
520 $a In our second study we conducted a series of analyses to estimate the effectiveness of child restraints in preventing injuries among children involved in crashes and to assess the magnitude of bias introduced via confounding when crash circumstances are not adequately adjusted for. We confirmed results reported in several prior studies indicating that child restraints are superior to lap-shoulder belts in preventing minor and moderate injuries. We consistently observed diminished effects of child restraints observed in unmatched analysis relative to matched analyses and showed that failure to adjust for confounding associated with crash circumstances in unmatched analyses results in attenuation of observed protective effects of child restraints. Our results should be considered in the interpretation of other studies reliant upon unmatched data.
520 $a In our third study, we estimated the effect of child restraint convictions on restraint use and injury outcomes. We found no association between child restraint convictions and restraint use and injury outcomes. The generally null findings reported in our study suggest that enforcement levels observed during the yens included in our study were too small to have an appreciable effect on restraint use patterns or injury outcomes. Follow-up analyses, including a replication of our study with additional years of data and measures of non-enforcement activity are needed to better elucidate the role of enforcement in preventing motor vehicle occupant injuries among children.
