Thesis (Ph.D.)--Capella University, 2006.
Anorexia nervosa is a life threatening disease to those who suffer from it, especially without treatment. Research in the field primarily has looked at the etiology of the disease. The outcome studies that have been conducted are almost exclusively quantitative in nature and show that treatment is not always successful. What appears to be missing in the literature are qualitative studies that look at what makes recovery effective, from the perspective of those who have recovered. This dissertation will interview people who have recovered. Using a grounded theory methodology, themes emerge that will help to answer the question: what makes treatment effective? The theory that emerged from the data is the need to alter the control structure of the anorexic patient in order for recovery to occur.
