Thesis (Ph.D.)--Yale University, 2005.
This dissertation explores poetic forms, structures, and functions of Liguria---as geographic physiognomy, literary topos, and dreamscape of desire---in Montale, Pound, and Benn, analyzing their respective bonds with the Mediterranean genius loci and mnemonic inscriptions of topographical consciousness. Readings take place through philosophical and psychoanalytic prisms of dream and landscape interpretation (Nietzsche, Freud)---theoretical lenses which focus the mapping of this poetic topography.

I pursue analogies between the mimesis and poiesis of verbal imagery, and the techniques of dreaming and painting, revealing how the mentally cryptic profits from the pictorial qualities of spatial representability. While reading various projections of landscape (Dante, Goethe) in which geography, archeology, and topography figure prominently as visual extensions of philosophy, psychology, and poetry, I demonstrate how dream work and the labor of literature co-exist in an intermediate third realm between Ligurian land on Tyrrhenian Sea, and a desired topos embodied in poetic scenes, diaristic acts, and displaced theaters of auto-topographical memory.

It is remarkable that although their Liguria invites innovative readings of (dis)placement, which run against the common grain of center and metropolis, this intriguing constellation of three major international Modernists has to date been overlooked. Montale theorizes the border, inscribing his homeland as childhood memory and existential threshold, while prison memories of his Ligurian residence inspire the emigre Pound. Benn never lays eyes on the terrain, but chooses Liguria as programmatic name for his sites of classical canonization. In this comparative, multilingual study, I track these writers' progress into resistance, captivity, and inner emigration . In isolated concentration, autobiography is poetically enacted and becomes synonymous with topography, so that the poems are about to take place.

Steep and remote Liguria's Gestalt as a geo-aesthetic borderland clearly manifests how the poetic as a marginalized genre on the contemporary map of literary studies offers a contrast to Mediterranean master narratives of mythic quests and legendary Grand Tours. Ec-centric Troubadours have cultivated peripheral visions and local vernaculars for as long as there has been oppression by forces antagonistic to the travels and travails of their literary premises. In the pastures of Euro-centrism , there are forgotten fringes.
