Thesis (Ed.D.)--Baylor University, 2005.
Using Snyder's hope theory (Snyder, Hams et al., 1991), the main problem investigated in this dissertation was the influence of hope and other selected variables on Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) degree attainment. Four research questions were addressed: (1) high versus low hope with respect to graduates and non-graduates; (2) the predictability of degree completion based on hope; (3) the strength of hope's two subcomponents (agency and pathways) in predicting degree completion independent of hope; and (4) the possible significance of other variables in predicting degree completion.

Information about degree completion status, level of hope, hope's subcomponents---agency (goal-directed determination) and pathways (planning of ways to meet goals), Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) test scores, number of months deployed, shift worked, perceived supervisor support, race, and strength of importance attached to earning the degree was collected from a sample of 443 master sergeants via an electronic survey. An independent samples t-test and three logistic regression analyses were used to analyze the data.

The major findings were as follows. Master sergeants who had completed the CCAF degree possessed statistically significant higher overall hope than those who had not completed the degree (research question 1). Hope was also a statistically significant predictor of CCAF degree completion (research question 2). With a statistically significant improvement in the amount of unexplained variance, the agency variable improved the logistic regression model's predictability of CCAF degree completion independent of overall hope (research question 3). Other variables that significantly predicted CCAF degree completion were ASVAB test scores and the agency subcomponent of hope (research questions 3 and 4). The shift a master sergeant worked was negatively related to degree completion (research question 4). The variable that most significantly increased the odds of CCAF degree completion was the amount of importance master sergeants attached to earning the degree (research question 4).

To help improve degree completion, suggestions were offered to make the CCAF degree mandatory before being promoted to master sergeant and to conduct annual counseling about CCAF degree progress. Additional policy, practice, and research recommendations were mentioned.
