Traditionally, "Identity Theory" and "Social Network Theory" have been conceptually distinct. However, both research areas assert that social interaction is key to the understanding of social relationships and social structure. In this research, I will merge Identity Theory and Social Network Theory. The argument to follow suggests that (1) identities are activated and evaluated during performances; (2) that feelings of acceptance and rejection between individuals are observed during the evaluation of these performances; and (3) that these identities are embedded in networks of social interaction. From these premises I will merge Identity Theory and Social Network Theory.

This work examines theses premises through the use of standard survey research techniques and through the use of computer simulation strategies. In the survey, each respondent is asked to list ten of their closest individuals that they are likely to interact with. These respondents are then asked to evaluate whether or not their identities are verified in their interaction encounters with these individuals. I argue that the probability that strong relationships will be observed will be higher when verification is present. This, in effect, illustrates the importance of selective interaction strategies. That is, individuals selectively interact with those that verify their identities.

The computer simulation research, on the other hand, translates identity theory into a computer model. In these models, I begin with a very simple model in order to assess when verification occurs. I then build a more complex model of the interaction process in order to observe what happens during selective interaction strategies.

This research, then, attempts to combine a number of theoretical strategies as well as methodological strategies in order to evaluate "what is happening" during our interaction encounters.
