This study investigates different test measures of crosscultural pragmatic competence of English speaking learners of Korean. The Primary goal of this study is to find effective methods for testing the cross-cultural pragmatics of English speaking learners of Korean. Special emphasis is given to KFL tests that can serve as pragmatic proficiency tests. Three pragmatic tests were translated into Korean from the English language prototype tests developed by Hudson et al. (1992, 1995). This project followed the framework used by Hudson et al. to investigate the pragmatics of Japanese learners of English as a second language in Hawaii.

520 $a Their purpose was to explore how reliable, valid, and effective their six English language cross-cultural pragmatic measures were. The findings of this study should contribute a great deal to Korean as a KFL pedagogy where such methods of testing cross-cultural pragmatics have not yet been fully developed. Since this study used the framework proposed by Hudson, Detmer, and Brown (1992, 1995), their works are reviewed in some detail.
520 $a A total of five direct, indirect, open-response and selected-response type tests were used to gather data from 53 participants. Statistical procedures including intra-class correlation coefficients, Pearson product-moment correlation coefficients, factor analysis, two-way MANOVA, and univariate follow-up statistics were applied to investigate the reliability and validity of each test.
