This study examined overweight and obese individuals' and DPs' perceptions of DPs' practices in weight management programs. It also examined patient satisfaction and its relationship to patient health achievements, particularly, completion of their program, compliance, and goal achievements.

Sixty-six patients and 317 DPs completed a five-anchor (1 indicates low; and five, high) online survey which assessed patients' and DPs' importance ratings and patients' satisfaction ratings of five leadership practices: challenge, inspire, enable, model, and encourage, and two quality service practices, empathize and assure. Participants were also asked about their background and experiences in the weight management program.

The ratings of importance were compared between the two groups. Patients' and DPs' overall importance ratings for the practices were respectively 4.36 and 4.44. There was no statistically significant difference between the importance ratings of the two groups, except for the practice 'encouraging' ( p<.05). The ratings of importance and satisfaction were compared within the group of patients. Patients' average satisfaction rating was 3.77, and there was a statistically significant difference (p<.0 1) between the importance patients attached to DPs' practices and their satisfaction with DPs' practices. About 80% of patients would recommend joining a weight management program, however, the most frequently stated reason for discontinuing a program was the attitudes and behaviors of DPs. More than 57% of patients felt DPs' behaviors only helped them to a low-medium extent in their health achievements. Patient satisfaction significantly correlated with program completion (p<.01) and with goal achievements ( p<.05), but not with compliance. Qualitative data analyses revealed similarities between patients' and DPs' statements, and both mentioned the seven practices as essential for desirable and efficient weight management programs.

Patients are dissatisfied with the practices of DPs in weight management programs and their expectations are not met. DPs value the same leadership and quality service practices as patients, and acknowledge their significance as well as the need for additional training to improve their weight loss counseling skills.
