Thesis (M.A.)--Lamar University - Beaumont, 2005.
The focus of this graduate thesis is the concept of transformation, specifically the transformation of metal and man-made surfaces by the forces of nature. Recreating this in my studio, I transform oil paint and canvas into an archeological object, a collection of textures and patterns, and a series of marks that hint of something that once was.

Traditionally considered a feminine craft, sewing is used in a more aggressive manner. The repetition of the stitches echoes the bold marks of the scratches and adds three-dimensional texture. Pieces of rusted metal collaged onto the canvas serve to objectify and provide content for the work.

These paintings are about process: the processes of erosion, oxidation and weatherization. The distressed surfaces bear witness to the physical struggle of creating the work coupled with the passage of time. Building up and scratching back through the paint layers provides the background for re-presenting once useful objects (safety pins, bottle caps, nuts and bolts) as something aesthetic. These objects, when stripped of their original purpose, become tokens of surface or texture. Through the combined influences of time and nature, they become invaluable in their service now as an aesthetic object.
