Nicotine has been under investigation to determine why it's so habit forming and to develop effective therapies to reduce addiction. While nicotine replacement therapy is the lead treatment for combating nicotine addiction, it has a high relapse rate, and other treatments are needed to decrease this rate. Correlations between nicotine addiction and depression have given rise to research on anti-depressants as treatment for dependence. The atypical anti-depressant, Bupropion, is reported to reduce nicotine dependence and is effective in smoking cessation. The effectiveness of bupropion has prompted the study of various other antidepressants to see if they also effectively decrease dependence. Nortriptyline, a tricyclic anti-depressant, was investigated here to determine its effectiveness at reducing nicotine dependence as indicated by reduction of abstinence syndrome precipitated by a nicotine antagonist. Nortriptyline pre-treatment did significantly decrease precipitated withdrawal signs in the rat, thus anti-depressants other than bupropion may be effective in assisting with smoking cessation.
