Thesis (M.S.)--Sarah Lawrence College, 2005.
The rapid advances in genetics in recent years have had a substantial impact on all healthcare professionals. It is now possible to develop new ways of detecting, preventing, treating and managing conditions with a genetic component. The expansion of genetics into the healthcare profession means that a growing number of health professionals, including midwives, will need skills and knowledge in genetics in order to take on new roles. There is limited data on the availability of genetics education in midwifery training programs and midwives' knowledge of genetics in the United States, although, several studies on this topic have been conducted in the United Kingdom. This paper examines the current genetics education curriculum for midwives in the United States and discusses the programs in place in both the United States and the United Kingdom addressing the gaps in genetics education among certified nurse-midwives.
