Biofilm processes have been studied for direct treatment of perchlorate-contaminated groundwater or as a post treatment of membrane or ion exchange process residuals containing elevated perchlorate concentrations as well as other anions (nitrate and sulfate). This research examined the use of flow recirculation to improve the performance of a fixed biofilm reactor for conditions typical of perchlorate-contaminated source waters: low influent perchlorate, little or no orgnic carbon, competing electron acceptors (oxygen and nitrate), and high salinity water.

Biofilm reactor experiments were conducted using two 12.5-liter columns packed with high porosity (92%) polypropylene rings. The empty-bed residence time (EBRT) varied from 3 to 8 hours. The ratio of internal recirculation flow:influent flow rate was 20:1. Biofilm reactor performance was investigated under varying influent perchlorate (10--1,000 mug/L), nitrate (0, 10 and 16 mg/L as N), and salinity (0 and 8 mS).

Biological reduction of 10 to 400 mug/L perchlorate was complete when the bioreactor EBRT was 8 hours corresponding mass loading rates from 0.03 to 1.3 g-ClO4-/m3-media/day, for both recirculation and single-pass flow conditions. However, recirculation significantly improved bioreactor performance after a step decrease in EBRT from 8 to 3 hours with influent perchlorate at 1,000 mug/L (media loading rate of 8.6 g-ClO4-/m3-media/day). Less time was required for acclimation and the effluent perchlorate concentration was significantly lower with recirculation, compared with the single-pass flow bioreactor.

Addition of 16 mg/L NO3-N did reduce perchlorate removal somewhat even when acetate was added in excess of theoretical carbon requirements. However perchlorate removal decreased dramatically, from 100% to 30% when acetate was limited, while denitrification decreased less: from 100% to 80%. Recirculation slowed the loss of perchlorate removal capacity during acetate limitation. Furthermore, recovery of perchlorate reduction was more rapid after acetate addition was restored compared with the performance of the single pass plug flow reactor.

Results indicate that fixed biofilm reactors are reliable for treatment of source water containing concentrations of perchlorate as low as 10 mug/L. Internal flow recirculation was found to have benefits, especially improving bioreactor response to changing influent conditions. Finally, simultaneous biological reduction of nitrate and perchlorate by the mixed biofilm culture depended on electron donor supply. Moderate salinity (8.0 mS) did not affect perchlorate reduction either alone or in the presence nitrate provided sufficient acetate was added.

Perchlorate reduction was observed in unacclimated samples of raw municipal sewage under anoxic reaction conditions. Dissolved oxygen greater than 2 mg/L inhibited all perchlorate reduction. When nitrate was present, perchlorate reduction by did not begin until nitrate and nitrite had been consumed.
