Pain in advanced prostate cancer patients is inadequately treated, despite the advances in pain management efforts. One of the barriers that has been identified in prostate cancer is inadequate assessment of pain coping and behaviors, which are important in providing nursing care which improves quality of life. The purpose of this cross-sectional correlational pilot study is to examine the relationships among cancer pain, coping strategies, and quality of life in patients with advanced prostate cancer. Utilizing Lazarus & Folkman's (1984) theory of stress and coping, the sample was 15 men with pain who were in the advanced stages of the disease. Sensory and affective pain were measured by the Pain and Symptom Control Clinic Assessment-VAS; active and passive pain coping strategies were measured with the Coping Strategies Questionnaire; and physical, emotional, and social functioning of quality of life were measured by the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire-C30. Patients were recruited during their clinic visits. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and correlations. Findings showed that the greater use of passive coping strategies in terms of catastrophizing, and praying/hoping was related to high sensory and affective pain and to lower physical functioning quality of life. The findings will help nurses to recognize the importance of assessing the way patients cope as a psychosocial factor that plays a role in nursing management of cancer pain. Future plan are to assess pain in advanced prostate cancer patients in Jordan will be assessed to determine the feasibility of doing a large follow up study.
