Researchers have examined academic achievement among African American children (Balfanz, 2000; Narine, 1992; Datnow & Cooper, 2000; Ford, Grantham & Bailey, 1999; Fordham, 1996; Foster & Peele, 1999, Hale, 1994; Irvine, 1990; Gibson & Ogbu, 1991; D'Andrea, 1995). Findings have shown that African American males are either dropping out of the educational system at alarming rates or are performing below their academic potential (Hale, 1994; Irvine, 1990; Gibson & Ogbu, 1991; D'Andrea, 1995). Researchers have examined the correlation between self-concept and academic achievement of students to determine the affect of self-perception on school performance (Zanobini & Usai, 2002; Hamachek, 1995; Cokley, 2000; Peterson, Burton, Baker, 1983).

520 $a African American adolescents possess a positive self-concept overall (Kunjufu, 1984; Hale-Benson, 1986; Cross, 1991). The high self-concept possessed by African American adolescents has been associated with both internal and external factors (Justice, Lindsey & Morrow, 1999; Sanders, 1998; Hale-Benson, 1986; Grant, Battle, Murphy & Heggoy, 1999; Kunjufu, 1984; Sanders & Herting, 2000; Sanders & Jordan, 2000; Cross, Strauss, & Phagen-Smith, 1999). Corbin and Pruitt (1999) indicated how mainstream society's values influences identity development/self-concept for minority children in diverse ways. This study examined an educational program designed specifically to address the needs of African American males.
520 $a The key purposes of this study were to (1) examine one educational program developed to address the needs of African American males and (2) determine if a positive relationship existed between participants' self-concept and academic achievement. Thirty African American pre-adolescent males attending two local elementary school in a large Midwestern community participated in the study. The results indicated that no significant difference existed for participants on self-concept/self-perception based on enrollment in an educational program. The findings indicated that a relationship existed among several of the variables. Both the pretest and posttest measures of self-concept reported statistically significant findings when they were correlated with the posttest measure of academic achievement. Also, a negative correlation was found when the posttest measure of self-concept was correlated with teacher's perception of student's academic ability.
