Cameras were given to each of the students, and the children were instructed to take pictures outside that represented beauty to them. Their photographs were developed and returned to them. The children then answered two questions about a photograph they each selected. The first question, "What did you take this picture of?" was designed to allow the children to state the subject in their own words, and to eliminate the possible problems of having the researcher identity the subject. Each child was then asked to write how the picture he or she selected represented beauty.

These findings about children's visions of outdoor beauty suggest several implications for landscape architecture. In order for children to find beauty outdoors, most of them must feel personally connected to what they see. Colorful environments, connections to family and a sense of play are also critical in Fifth Graders' conceptions of beauty. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)
