The purpose of this study was to better understand the psycho-emotional experience of high performance athletes to major injury, and to provide suggestions for sport medicine practitioners that are derived from athlete's experiences to better assist them in psycho-emotional rehabilitation of athletic injury.

520 $a This descriptive study utilized qualitative methods. Prospective, semi-structured interviews were conducted with five participants. Verbatim transcripts of the interviews were obtained and the data extracted from the words of the participants. The data were inductively analyzed using global analysis, thematic and open coding. Analysis was conducted from specific to general themes. Validity of the data was ensured by thick description, investigator triangulation and member checking.
520 $a The psycho-emotional experience was broken down into three phases: early, mid- and late rehabilitation and issues unique to each phase were presented. Suggestions were made for the health care team to help ease the physical rehabilitation by attending to the psycho-emotional issues.
