The therapeutic relationship is a nursing intervention that is used to bring about insight and behavioral change. Process recordings are one type of learning activity that fosters the development of therapeutic relationships. The purpose of this study was to determine to what extent process recordings are perceived as an effective tool in the development and use of therapeutic relationships. The cross-sectional, non-experimental descriptive-correlational study involved administering a questionnaire to undergraduate nursing students who were currently taking or had completed a psychiatric nursing course. The overall finding of this study was that nursing students perceive process recordings to be "somewhat effective." Implications of this study include the need for further discussion among nursing faculty about the learning objectives of process recordings and alternative learning activities. In addition, further research on the effectiveness of process recordings needs to be conducted to determine if this is an effective learning tool.
