In this dissertation I examine the performance of Irish step dance in order to explore the relationship between Irish dance, Irish culture, and Irish identity. Irish dancing is a prime location for researching questions about the contested concept of identity. This style of dance is explicitly connected to a particular ethnic group; and Irish dance is readily visible as a unique dance form. Dance theorists and dance ethnographers encourage the examination of dance as something more than an artistic event. Through movement, dance communicates information about the social norms and values of a culture.

This cultural study provides a detailed description of Irish dance through information obtained through historical and ethnographic research. I surveyed historical research to uncover the origins of Irish dance and its place in Irish and Irish American history. I also conducted ethnographic research through participant-observation and semi-structured interviews. I interviewed dancers, parents of dancers, instructors, and judges. The interviews and participation-observation were conducted at feiseanna, or dance competitions, and Celtic festivals. Thousands of Irish dancers attend feiseanna every year. Feiseanna are considered cultural exemplars rather than tourist attractions. In this study, I also provide a description of the feiseanna including the physical layout, process for competing, and appearance of the dancers. Finally, I performed a rhetorical analysis of the information I collected, utilizing gender, dance, and performance theory.

The costuming, posture, and movement are unique elements of Irish dance. The reasons for the creation and performance of these unique elements are linked to historical and social situations in Ireland. Consequently, Irish dance has been connected to Irish culture and social values. Performance choices in Irish dance are also influenced by the sex of the dancer. Female and male dancers are costumed differently and often perform different steps. I discuss the implications of these cultural and gendered performance choices. Irish dancers are also shown to affirm, to resist, and to reinterpret Irish identity through performance choices they make.
