Thesis (M.S.)--University of Nevada, Reno, 2005.
Given data that suggests the economic performance of China is converging to that of the United States, this thesis calibrates a standard growth model and simulates various possible convergence scenarios.{09}The effort to calibrate an "unconditional convergence" model leads to the conclusion that there is a structural difference between the economies of China and the U.S., with China necessarily possessing a much lower level of technology. Without technology transfer, the parameterized simulations suggest that China will not achieve present U.S. living standards for at least a century. With significant technology transfer, China could achieve current U.S. living standards in as little as three decades. The simulations suggest that technology transfer will speed China's development much more quickly than the maintenance of a higher than normal savings rate.
