The San Fernando Valley Spineflower (Chorizanthe parryi fernandina , SFVS), once presumed extinct, was rediscovered on the Ahmanson Ranch, Ventura County, California in 1999. This study determined the pollinators of SFVS (specifically the role of ants) their constancy to SFVS and the selfing capabilities of SFVS. Bagging experiments were used to determine fruit set in plants where crawling insects or all insects (self without vector) were excluded. Open pollinated plants were controls. Pollinators collected using nets and respirators had their pollen removed and analyzed. Fruit set was determined by the ratio of seeds produced per 200 flowers counted. Fruit set in control plants averaged 55%, plants excluding crawling insects 60%, and the self group 25%. 53 species of pollinators were collected, however constancy was only determined for Apis mellifera (94% SFVS pollen). SFVS has a numerous array of pollinators, not limited to ants, and is a facultative selfer.
