Sex determination and reproductive life histories were examined experimentally in representatives of the caridean shrimp genera Hymenocera and Lysmata found in coastal waters of Hawaii. These shrimp were chosen due to the possibility of plasticity in their sex determination. Examinations of reproductive behavior, function, and morphology of all species were made. For harlequin shrimp, Hymenocera picta, naive juveniles were placed in novel social environments: paired juveniles, single juveniles, adult/juvenile pairs. The social environment of naive juveniles had no clear effect upon the sexual phenotype, but single females attained puberty at significantly great ages and sizes than did females paired with males. Hence, for H. picta, the influence of social environment in primary sex determination is limited to the timing of female puberty, not the sexual phenotype. This is the first demonstration of this phenomenon in decapod Crustacea. For Lysmata, four species were closely observed to determine reproductive function. Individuals of all species ( L. amboinensis, L. trisetacea, L. ternatensis, and L. anchisteus ) are functional males when young, but become functional simultaneous hermaphrodites later in life. Lysmata gonads are functional ovo-testes, with anterior ovarian, posterior testicular portions, and two sets of gonoducts. This reproductive pattern is known only from Lysmata in all the decapod Crustacea. Removal of the copulatory appendages in L. amboinensis demonstrates that these species transfer sperm without the appendix masculina and in different manner than is known for other carideans. This sperm transfer mode may have enhanced the evolution of simultaneous hermaphroditism in this genus. The behavior of L. amboinensis pairs in the presence of a "stranger" was observed at three points in the reproductive cycles of pair-mates. The pattern of aggressive behavior in L. amboinensis pair-mates towards "strangers" indicates that aggression is expressed whenever possible and is not strictly related to mate guarding. Close examination of reproduction in L. trisetacea, L. ternatensis, and L. anchisteus revealed the presence of an abdominal bopyrid parasite on all species. The parasite inhibited the female, but not male function of euhermaphrodites, in contrast to the complete reproductive inhibition known in gonochoristic hosts. The findings in all these experiments are unique and original.
