The general biology, reproductive processes, and embryonic development of three species of sharks is described here. The chain dogfish, Scyliorhinus retifer, is a common oviparous catshark of the western North Atlantic. Mating and egg laying were observed in the laboratory. Females and males reach sexual maturity at about 520 mm TL and 500 mm TL respectively. Follicles are ovulated when they reach 18 mm diameter. In the laboratory, females lay one egg pair at approximately 15.3 d intervals. Development at 11.7-12.8Subjects--Topical Terms:
