Thesis (Ph.D.)--The Chinese University of Hong Kong (People's Republic of China), 1998.
The China Development Finance Corporation (CDFC) was a limited company founded in 1934 by T. V. Soong who was then relieved from the posts of Vice-Premier of the Executive Yuan and Finance Minister. The main purpose of founding this Corporation was to develop internal capital market to raise funds for China's industrial and mining enterprises and to attract foreign investment. Since its inception, the Corporation took on almost all the business of importing foreign capitals in China. It also took over other state corporations by increasing its share-holding of these enterprises. The CDFC's business expanded rapidly and made astonishing profits. The shareholders and board directors of the Corporation were either high officials in charge of the country's finance and economy or tycoons of the financial circles. For these reasons, the CDFC occupied a very important place in China's modern economic and financial history. Due to the inaccessibility of archival materials, until now there has been no scholarly research on the Corporation.

Using primarily the archival materials made available only in recent years from the two sides of the Taiwan Strait and the newspapers of the time, this dissertation attempts to make a full and thorough study of the CDFC's founding and its management activities by placing it in the context of the history of China's modernization process and the international relationship of the Far East.
