Background. Obesity and its associated health risks are leading causes of morbidity. Changes in the proteome due to alterations in fat mass (FM) are important in understanding the physiological mechanisms associated with obesity.

Purpose. To retrospectively evaluate serum protein expression following dietary-induced alterations in FM in individuals using surface enhanced laser desorption ionization time of flight (SELDI-TOF) mass spectrometry (MS).
520
$a
Methods. Participants were retrospectively grouped based on percent change in FM over 28 days. Post-study blood samples were analyzed using SELDI-TOF MS for between group differences in protein peak intensity. Significant differences in protein peak intensity between groups were determined using ANOVA.
520
$a
Results. The relative intensity of nine proteins were different between groups (P < 0.05).
520
$a
Conclusion. Changes in one's fat mass appeared to alter the abundance of specific plasma proteins. These differences may be related to the underlying physiology of changes in fat mass.
