This thesis examines two particular aspects of Tristan Tzara's writing: humor and childhood. It highlights the poet's role in the Dada movement, and shows how he drew upon the dynamics of humor and childhood.

The first part deals with humor and its manifestations through revolt and derision, and defines its function in the poet's writing. The second part explains how Tzara developed the children's ways of thinking and speaking into poetic techniques based on spontaneity, the destruction of communication, experimentation with nonsense, the importance of sensations, and an animistic relation with nature. The thesis reveals the poet's contribution to the modern representation of the child as elaborated by his contemporary, Jean Piaget.
