Walker Percy wrote novels integrating a Christian view of man with existential philosophical exploration. Whereas Percy's 1960's fiction emphasized individual truth-seeking, the 1970's and 1980's found Percy critiquing secular America. The novelist made his Christian message increasingly explicit, warning his society against scientific humanism. Philosopher Eric Voegelin, who deemed our age to be "gnostic" in spirit, provided Percy with a bold conceptual and symbolic framework for his apocalyptic critiques. The study makes use of primary and secondary sources pertaining to Love in the Ruins, Lancelot, and The Thanatos Syndrome; and to Voegelin's theories. Results are presented in a discussion of the author's move toward Christian social critique, Voegelin's theories and their influence upon postwar America and Walker Percy, the gnostic theme in the three novels, and the lasting cultural significance of Percy's illumination of modern American gnosis.
