This dissertation addresses the Italian hermetic poetry of the terza generazione, a group of poets---Piero Bigongiari, Mario Luzi, Alfonso Gatto, Alessandro Parronchi, Vittorio Sereni, as well as others---whose early work took place between the early 1930s and the end of World War II. It focuses on problems of metaphor and image, including the use of poetic abstraction, the resistance to the image as conveyor of meaning, and the place of vision in hermetic poetry. Examining the debate over hermetic "analogy," and sketching out the theories of metaphor inherent in these approaches, I suggest an alternative theory, one informed by the work of Paul Ricoeur and by Bigongiari's own notion of a poetry that creates sense out of non-sense. I then look at the technique of synesthetic metaphor with regard to a larger discussion of the crisis of vision enacted in hermetic poetry. Finally, I go on to address the role of the visual in the terza generazione from another vantage point, one involving the critical practice of interart analogies, specifically between hermetic poetry and the movement in abstract painting known in Italy as informale. My goal consists in part of a reevaluation of Bigongiari's critique of the poetic image as central to an understanding of Italian hermeticism. Where criticism has tended to revolve around the troubled notion of hermeticism as an obscure, "closed" poetry, I emphasize instead what Bigongiari has called the "freedom of the image" and the resulting "open" character of the work of the terza generazione. This study also provides a clearer understanding of those aspects of hermetic poetry that determine its originality and bring to the fore the avant-garde character of the movement.
