Thesis (M.S.)--University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez (Puerto Rico), 2005.
Three of the most important contaminant agents related to non-point sources are suspended sediments, nitrogen and phosphorus. This study quantified the concentration and discharges of total Kjeldhal nitrogen (TKN), total phosphorus (TP), dissolved phosphorus (DP), and suspended sediments (SS) during storm events (runoff) in two sub watersheds: Miraflores (224 ha) and Cerro Gordo (714.7 ha), which are part of the greater Rio Grande de Anasco watershed in Puerto Rico. Storm events were monitored from August 2003 until July 2004. The outlets of each sub watershed were instrumented with ISCORTM 3700 automatic sampling equipment, and a pressure transducer ISCORTM 4200. Average concentration values for SS were 1552 mg L-1 and 2738 mg L-1 for Miraflores and Cerro Gordo sub watersheds, respectively. Average concentrations of TP exceeded 0.1 mg L-1 (limit threshold suggested for eutrophication) for both sub watersheds, with values of 0.34 and 0.48 mg L-1 for Miraflores and Cerro Gordo, respectively. Average TKN concentrations were 1.70 mg L-1 for Miraflores, and 3.15 mg L-1 for Cerro Gordo. These high concentrations suggest that nutrients come from non-point sources such as rural unsewered homes, and farm animals in both sub watersheds, and intensive agricultural activities in the Cerro Gordo. Discharges of SS, TP, DP and TKN (kg ha -1) in the Cerro Gordo sub watershed were 4.5, 1.7, 1.5 and 2.3 times higher than those in Miraflores, respectively.
