Fusarium head blight (FHB) is an economically important disease of wheat in the U.S. This study was performed to investigate genetic diversity in hard winter wheat genotypes for FHB resistance and gene effects in selected winter and spring wheat genotypes. Genotypes were evaluated under field and greenhouse conditions. Genotypes differed significantly for disease index and percent Fusarium damaged kernel (FDK). The genotype-by-year interaction for disease index and FDK was significant. Disease index and percent FDK were not correlated but they were correlated with deoxynivalenol content in the field.

Diallel analysis consisted of genotypes 'Ning7840', 'ND2710', 'Harding', '2137', 'BacUp' and 'Nekota' in the greenhouse and only the first five genotypes in the field in 2004. The F1 and F2 generations were evaluated in the greenhouse, whereas F2 was evaluated in the field. The general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) effects were significant. Combining ability ratio was high and narrow-sense heritability was moderate. Additive gene effects were found to be more important than non-additive gene effects for FHB resistance in this study.
