Thesis (M.S.)--The University of Texas at El Paso, 2005.
This study was focused on the development of stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) to analyze polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHS) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in soil and vegetation. It is known that various parameters affect the extraction of the analytes from samples matrices to the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-coated stir bars. Therefore, optimizations for trace compounds were conducted upon two most influential parameters, e.g. solvent efficiency and extraction time efficiency. For PAHs investigation, naphthalene (pKow = 3.30), phenanthrene (pKow = 4.46), 9-acetylanthracene (pKow = 4.03) and benzo[e]pyrene (pKow = 6.44) were selected as model compounds. For PCBs, AroclorRTM 1254 was investigated.
