The philosophy of Richard Rorty and mainstream Christianity would appear to stand in some tension. Rorty's neo-pragmatist antirepresentationalist ironism seem to conflict with the typical Christian claims that Christianity is a repository of eternal truths and that Christians should be unconditionally committed to their faith. The question to be addressed here is whether these seemingly antagonistic lines of thought can be reconciled, whether there can be a Rortyan Ironism who is also a faithful Christian. To pursue this question we shall explore the origins of Rortyan Ironism in Rorty's recognition of the radical contingency and linguisticality of human existence. Then we shall expound on Rorty's concept of liberal ironist as developed in his Contingency, Irony, and Solidarity. Once we have in mind what Rorty means by irony as an 'existential trope', or orientation towards life, including the considerable implications of ironism for the notion of 'truth', we will explore Rorty's writings on Christianity specifically and religion generally. Rorty has written a surprisingly large amount on the ramifications of his thought for religion, and we will examine much of it in some detail. Some of these writings detail Rorty's ideas on the proper role of religion in the public sphere of a Western liberal democracy. All of this will give us a complete view of what it means to be a Rortyan Ironist. Next we shall turn to the question of whether such a Rortyan Ironist can also be a Christian. To answer this question, however, we will first have to address the question of what it means to be a Christian in the first place. Once we have a plausible definition of 'Christian', we can finally turn to the programmatic question of whether Rortyan Christian Ironism is a viable concept. Consulting the work of a number of theorists who advocate some form of ironism as a virtue for Christians, we shall discover not only that Rortyan Christian Ironism is a legitimate form of Christian spirituality, but that it can even be recommended on Christian grounds as one way of being a Christian.
