Thesis (M.A.)--Laurentian University (Canada), 2005.
This thesis will examine two oral traditions, the Anishnaabe [Ojibwe] and Irish Celtic, and the roles that language and story play in their respective spiritual traditions. In order to compare and appreciate these spiritual traditions, one needs to see that mythos is more basic than logos, which redirects my research from the post-modern commitment to analyzing, synthesizing and codifying information and interpretation so as to arrive at what has been thought of until recently as a search for "empirical" truth. Mythos, I believe, is a more effective medium for interpreting and experiencing, for comparing "truth" embedded in what is commonly referred to as the "oral tradition." Specifically, this thesis has three objectives: (1) To examine how language and story encode spirituality in the two oral traditions, Anishnaabe and Irish Celtic. (2) To compare the two spiritual traditions as expressed through language and story to find a unifying motif. (3) To address the question whether orality rather than literacy makes language and story more efficacious as conveyors of the sacred.
