Recent research shows that higher education faculty and administrators generally favor academic freedom but do not share a common understanding of academic freedom. This dissertation presents the results of researching the differences in faculty and administrator knowledge of academic freedom and how each group attained that knowledge. Descriptive survey research was used to obtain responses from the full-time faculty, adjunct faculty, and administrators in the Maricopa County Community College District (MCCCD). While not generalizable, the data suggested some confusion regarding the application of academic freedom knowledge. Academic freedom is highly regarded but misunderstood by MCCCD faculty and administrators. The creation of a detailed policy reinforced by opportunities for informal discussions, workshops, and new employee orientations is recommended to facilitate the creation of a more knowledgeable faculty and administration.
