Thesis (D.Min.)--Princeton Theological Seminary, 2004.
Under the Faculty Advisement of Dr. John Stewart and Dr. Jacqueline Lapsley the current use of eulogy and tribute in the funeral rite of the Presbyterian Church (USA) was evaluated by reviewing the historical development of denominational polity and resources as well as interviews with Presbyterian pastors. Eulogy and tribute were found to be a challenging yet significant aspect of current ministry and thus a complement to the denomination's polity and direction. Issues such as the function of the funeral in relation to grief, the specific parts of the rite and its development, as well as the notion of where eulogy and tribute participate in worship were explored so to achieve a qualitative evaluation. Having reached a positive evaluation for the practice as well as its place in the development of worship, the historical survey and field work were then brought to bear upon current literature and research. It was demonstrated that this study fills a gap regarding the absence of inquiry involving the funeral rite as a highly refined act of worship in North America.
