This dissertation addresses the query optimization problem for object relational databases. A novel query optimization model, including an object relational algebra, equivalence rules, heuristics and cost estimation, is introduced. We believe this is the first query optimization model based on an object relational algebra. We also propose an optimizer architecture based on this model for SemanticObjects, an object relational application development platform. Two applications, namely a biological image database and a chemical structure database, have been developed to test our query optimization model.

It has a broad application in areas that involve complex structures. However, query optimization is extremely important and critical, since users cannot wait for hours to get their results.
