In this dissertation I examine the impact of expatriate experience on four American women artists in their quest for artistic and creative identities. These artists, Grace Renzi, Kate Van Houten, and Laurie Karp, of Paris, France and Rachelle Puryear, of Stockholm, Sweden, represent three generations of expatriates and have resided abroad between 28 and 52 years. Research for this study explores women's 150 year participation in an American tradition of expatriate artists, and issues of American identity that are part of its discourse. The study then draws from the work of developmental theorists to illuminate the psychological development of women. The study then observes expatriate experience through social science research models, presenting statements by young expatriate women artists in New York about their personal search for identity as illuminated by intercultural adaptation and migration theory.

520 $a The methodology is constructed as a three tier research study, commencing with the collection of oral history interviews with American women artists living in France and Sweden. The interview narratives were the source of identifiable patterns which were used to structure the case studies. Each case illuminates a dynamic interplay of moments in historical time, gender and expatriate experience and its effect upon the artist's life and work. Five major themes arose in the case studies: (1) identity, (2) experiences as expatriate women, (3) alienation from feminism, (4) art and metaphor and (5) artistic context and network of enterprise. These case studies show how women as creative individuals find alternative paths to construct a network of enterprise. One noteworthy quality of the post-World War II expatriate experience shared by these women in their development as artists is the absence of female mentors from their narratives of their years at home and abroad.
520 $a The mentor and an artist community played powerful roles in the work of transforming these women from students into artists. To prepare art students to develop as artists in the world, it is suggested that college art majors be provided alternatives to formulaic models of art world success divorced from their real world experience.
