Very little information on the guitar has survived from the first half of the nineteenth century. The Elements of Guitar Playing, by James Ballard, published in 1838, is the earliest known full-scale classical guitar method book originally written in English, and published in the United States.

The historical significance of this nearly extinct treatise is the main focus of the study. The written document is organized into two main parts. The first part includes a brief history of the early nineteenth-century guitar, and background information on James Ballard. Ballard's original teaching devices and techniques, and his original ideas on methods of accompaniment are discussed. His unique system of "positions," which is the foundation of his approach to teaching harmony and fingering on the guitar, is also examined. The second part of the written document features the published facsimile edition of James Ballard's The Elements of Guitar Playing.

The music in James Ballard's treatise is representative of American popular guitar music from the early nineteenth century. The instructions and descriptions that accompany Ballard's studies provide rare documentation of the techniques used during that era. This facsimile edition renders available a valuable resource concerning early nineteenth-century music, exercises, and methods.
