This thesis includes a comprehensive biography of the pianist-composer Leo Ornstein (c. 1892-2002) and explores his influences on early twentieth century music and composers. In addition his compositional process and style characteristics are examined, including the use of program music, pentatonic scales, tone clusters, rhythm and his approach the use of harmony and texture.
