Researchers in the social sciences have often been associated with either quantitative or qualitative methods of inquiry. Currently, a third research tradition that employs the mixing of quantitative and qualitative methods has begun to emerge. The current study reviews the emergence of mixed methods as well as the use of quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods in the field of educational research. To illustrate an application of a mixed methods design in educational research, this study focused on field trip use. The aim of this study was to assess perceived values and problems associated with field trips at a middle school from students, parents, and staff utilizing Creswell's (2003) concurrent triangulation mixed methods design. Quantitative data took the form of surveys, and students' grades. Qualitative data consisted of open-ended questions and focus groups. Data were analyzed using Tashakkori and Teddlie's (1998) concurrent parallel mixed analysis.

Quantitatively, students showed significantly higher scores on the general participation factor that emerged from the survey, thus indicating that students had a more favorable impression of field trips than did parents. The qualitative portion of the study provided categories that confirmed existing categories in the survey, provided clarity and specificity to existing categories, as well as provided new categories. In addition, focus group data provided information regarding participants' preferences for surveys or focus groups as well as the benefits and problems they associate with each method. Implications regarding selection of methods as well as measurement of field trip perceptions are discussed.
