Data was gathered by several means to determine Hennagin's most known and most performed choral works. A letter via email was sent to the 200 leaders of music education listed at the website for the Music Educators National Conference (MENC) in forty-nine states and the District of Columbia. These people were asked whether their respective states utilized a prescribed music list for state choral contests. Forty-three states and the District of Columbia responded to the request. Twenty-one of these states have prescribed music lists for state choral contests. Fourteen states have at least one choral composition by Michael Hennagin on their state prescribed music lists.

An extensive internet search was done for each choral title of Hennagin's published output. This search yielded a result of thirty-eight performances of Hennagin's published choral works. These performances span from 2005 back to 1977 and from locations in Canada, Germany, and all over the United States.

Data was compiled from two American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) publications. One publication listed four of Hennagin's works as recommended literature for college and university choirs. The other listed music performed at ACDA national and regional conventions from 1960--2000. Choral compositions by Hennagin were performed twenty-four times during this timeframe.

A chart was developed to list the frequency of each published choral composition by Hennagin found in this study. The works that emerged with the greatest frequencies were Three Emily Dickinson Songs and Walking on the Green Grass.

These works were analyzed according to LaRue's Guidelines for Style Analysis and included discussions of sound, harmony, melody, rhythm, and growth (SHMRG) plus text influence. From these analyses, comparisons were made between the compositions and Hennagin's choral compositional style features were identified.
