The structure of Na(,3)YSi(,3)O(,9) was studied by x-ray diffraction and infrared spectrum and was found to be isostructural with Na(,4)CaSi(,3)O(,9) except for it being pseudo-cubic instead of cubic. Solid solutions of the type Na(,3)YSi(,3)O(,9) with the general formula Na(,3+x)M(,1-y)Si(,3-z)P(,z)O(,9+(x-3y+z)/2) (M = Lu, Yb, Tm, Er, Y, Ho, Dy, Gd, Eu, and Sm) have been synthesized. X-ray diffraction showed single phase in the composition range y = 0-0.3, z = 0-0.2, and for some particular values of x usually between 0-0.4. Ionic conductivity measurements were done on these compounds in three different states, crystalline, glass, and glass-ceramic. The results showed comparable values. Conductivity of Na(,3.2)Sm(,0.7)Si(,2.9)P(,0.1)O(,8.7) was about 7.8 x 10('-4) (ohm-cm)('-1) at 320(DEGREES)C in the crystalline form and about 8.5 x 10('-4) (ohm-cm)('-1) for Na(,3.2)Y(,0.7)Si(,2.9)P(,0.1)O(,8.7) at 320(DEGREES)C in the glassy state. In the crystalline state, an increase in sodium concentration and a decrease in M('+3) concentration induced higher ionic conductivity. These effects could be explained as being due to an increase in the mobile species concentration and the formation of vacancies, where the size of M('+3) influences the unit cell volume thereby leading to an effect on the magnitude of the conductivity. Measurements of conductivity in Na(,5)MSi(,4)O(,12) (M = Er, Y, Gd, and Sm) type materials both in the glass and glass-ceramic states were also carried out. The conductivities in the glass and glass-ceramic states were lower than those in the crystalline state. The conductivity of glass-ceramic was larger than that of the glassy state. The activation energies of samples with M = Er and Y in glass-ceramic state were 4.0 and 4.4 Kcal/mole respectively, while in the crystalline state values of 7.5 and 7.1 Kcal/mole were obtained.Subjects--Topical Terms:
