The aim of our enquiry is to set anew the issue of the relationship between the Homeric Odyssey and Joyce's Ulysses. The two works are positioned within a broader configuration including also Dante's Comedy and Flaubert's La Tentation de saint Antoine; methodologically, Michael Riffaterre's theory of intertextuality is taken as a point of departure. In the processual relationship between Ulysses and the Odyssey, one can discern three main stages. In chapters 1-3 of Joyce's novel, the Odyssey tends to be approached from a generalizing and allegorizing point of view. In chapters 4-11, the Odyssey is present through the variegated, polytropic character of Bloom and through his sensitivity to situations. From chapter 12 on (and with a climax in chapter 15), Joyce seeks to come to terms with the Homeric scene of the Suitors' Slaughter and its embeddedness in the narrative texture of the Odyssey.
