Performance appraisals are a critical part of most organizations, including educational institutions. Ineffective performance appraisal systems can be extremely harmful to organizations and individuals with potential legal implications, if the processes are invalid. Despite considerable research on performance appraisals, there is still no agreement on a single best approach, which creates significant problems for educational institutions that want to deploy an effective appraisal system.

With a goal of determining future improvements to the system, this research evaluated the effectiveness of the performance appraisal process used by the South Carolina Technical College System. Specifically, the research questions focused on how effective and equitable were the performance appraisal processes. Data for this study were collected using a mixed quantitative and qualitative design. Surveys were sent to approximately 150 employees, including administrators, faculty, and staff. The quantitative portion of the results indicated that the current appraisal process was effective and administered in an equitable manner. The qualitative portion, however, acknowledged that there is room for improvement.

Key recommendations on ways to improve performance appraisals may provide a foundation for improvements in other organizational settings, especially educational institutions. It is important to assure the performance appraisal process is conducted in an effective and equitable manner. When appraisals are conducted in a haphazard manner there is a negative impact on employees, their families, and the organization. This study, as well as future comparable studies in other organizations, is a catalyst for continuous improvement of both organizations and individuals.
