Thesis (Ph.D.)--City University of New York, 2005.
This dissertation investigates the increasingly important subject of using current Medical Networks as a means of communicating medical information. The IN (Intelligent Networks) and AIN (Advanced Intelligent Networks) services can be realized through the use of IM_ATM (Intelligent Medical Asynchronous Transfer Mode) switch architecture. Medical procedures will be implemented by using the medical codes. ATM cells are modified to accommodate the following information: specially tailored security code, patient ID, five digits of CPT (Current Procedure Terminology) medical codes and other customized information. One bit from the PT (Payload Type) Field of the header block that has been reserved for future use is utilized to distinguish the request information from the customers.

Five Network models: 5-node regional networks, 9-node regional networks, Single National WAN cloud, three International WAN clouds, and five Global WAN clouds are designed and created for testing and analyzing both traditional and new IM_ATM networks. Each of 128kbps, 256kbps, and 512kbps bandwidths are assigned with three traffic intensities (60%, 75%, and 90%). 100013 and 50013 (or 80013 and 400B) message sources are chosen for the traditional and 4613 for the IM ATM networks.

Simulation is an important tool for modeling a network to determine its performance characteristics. After carefully evaluate these two simulation software, COMNET III is chosen to model both the traditional and IM_ ATM networks. The statistics of Message Count, Message Delay (packets created, packets delivered, and packets dropped), Message + Response; Message Delay in MS (milliseconds), and Channel/Link Utilization (%) are collected. These measures are used for testing and cross-comparing of both the traditional and new IM_ ATM networks. The limitations of the traditional networks and merits of the new IM_ ATM architecture are discussed and analyzed. Suggestions are also made for future research topics.
