Thesis (M.S.)--The University of Texas at El Paso, 2005.
The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of two training procedures, fading and trial & error designed to train equivalency relations and test for generalization to untrained relationships. Thirty college students were recruited to participate in the study and were randomly assigned into three groups, fading, trial & error, and control. The participants were presented with stimuli via a proprietary computer program Brain Power (Salvatore & Biswas, 2000). The chosen stimuli were nonsense symbols, which eliminated any previous history of reinforcement with language symbols. Though previous studies have shown fading training to produce fewer errors than trial & error training, in this study the results demonstrated that the trial & error group produced fewer errors and was more successful in generalizing to untrained relationships over the fading group.
