This study was designed to reveal the effect of learning computer skills on low-income African Americans and Hispanics in a senior center in New York City. The conceptual framework was based on principles of adult learning, including self-directed learning, self-efficacy, goal setting and feedback, self-actualization, self-management, and self-monitoring. Grounded theory procedures were used. Data from interviews were analyzed with open, axial, and selective coding.

The seniors indicated that they learned many computer skills in a class setting in which they received feedback from the instructor and their peers. The core theme that emerged was that low-income African American and Hispanic older adults increased self-confidence as they mastered computers. The Internet provided a means to increase communication with family and friends and to expand other aspects of their daily lives.

The results of this research challenge the myths and stereotypical labeling associated with aging and suggest that computer training for low-income minority elderly should become a priority for policymakers concerned about elderly citizens' welfare. Senior centers should install computer labs to offer technology classes tailored to the older population. Personal instruction, along with other practical points of computer access, such as nonthreatening public access sites available to this population, is warranted.
