Piglet immune function increased with age and was influenced by feeding glutamine (gln, 4.4% w/w, n = 10/group) and barley-derived Beta-glucan (b-glc, n = 8, 7.4%). Gln-fed piglets has an increased neutrophil granularity (p < 0.05), a decreased expression of CD45RA in peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL, p < 0.05) and mesenteric lymph nodes (MLN, p < 0.01), a higher rate of 3H-thymidine incorporation in MLN and PP (p < 0.05), a decreased production of IFN-gamma in PBL, and a decrease in IL-4 and IL-2 production in MLN (p < 0.05). Escherichia coli ( E. coli)-exposed intestinal tissue mounted in USSING chambers revealed a higher short-circuit current and potential difference in control-fed piglets. B-glc-fed piglets had a significant increase in the concentration of total white blood cells and lymphocytes (p < 0.01), in the percentage of CD8+ cells expressing CD45RA in PBL (p < 0.05), and ileal Mannitol permeability and Conductance (p < 0.05). Adhesion of FITC-labeled E. coli to freshly isolated enterocytes was also influenced by dietary b-glc.
